Reading poetry; writing poetry; listening to poetry; learning about poets; if these are the things you enjoy, come join us.

We meet the second Saturday of each month at the Sunset United Methodist Church in Pasadena, Texas.

Mission: Our purpose is to share an appreciation of poetry through the reading and writing of poems of all types. Our programs review the lives and works of poets of the world, present and past. We encourage our members who enjoy writing, by reading their poetry and discussing poetic techniques. We also encourage those who don’t write poetry, to just come and enjoy listening and reading. We encourage the writing of poetry in the public schools through contests and other means.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was filled with sorrow at the tragic death of his wife in a fire in 1861. The Civil War broke out the same year, and it seemed this was an additional punishment. Two years later, Longfellow was again saddened to learn that his own son had been seriously wounded in the Army of the Potomac.

Sitting down to his desk, one Christmas Day, he heard the church bells ringing. It was in this setting that Longfellow wrote these lines:

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
